Trimming & Shearing

Alpacas have two toes and soft pads which will not poach your ground, but the toenails require regular checking and trimming at least 3 to 4 times per year. They only have teeth on their lower pallet, and these require trimming also from time to time. This can be done at the annual Shearing time, but if needed in between, either your Vet or seek the help of an Equine Dentist to perform the task.

Shearing:

Do book your Shearer well in advance. These guys get exceptionally busy and you do not want to leave your animals struggling with heavy fleeces in the heat. Heat-stroke can be a big problem. Alpacas are tied down to be shorn. At first, the process looks a bit scary!, but once you see how quickly and effortlessly it is done, you do understand that it is the safest procedure. We use a fantastic guy Mike Banks. He has a really lovely manner with the animals and does a brilliant job.

Fleeces:
Fleeces can be sold to individual Hand-Spinners, who usually take the raw fleece as it is, or you can sell them to a larger mill, where you will have to remove all debris prior to selling. This is time consuming but essential, as you will be charged for any extra work carried out at the mill. The beauty of finding a local Hand-Spinner, is that you will get the processed yarn back from each of your individual animals, (if you so wish), but prices vary and you need to discuss this in detail first. You can of course, learn to spin yourself. It is very rewarding but time consuming, but a lovely way of relaxing.
