QuakersCroft Alpacas

Housing

Alpacas rarely need to be housed, they thrive outside. That said, it is advised that you have a three sided field shelter to protect them from extreme weather conditions. Their paddocks need to be fenced 4 – 5ft high, post, rail and stock fence works well, and they rarely challenge it.

It’s worth giving considerable thought to the layout of your paddocks.

Think about when you have to move your animals around. Which will be the easiest way to do this? We’ve made mistakes along the way, so do get as much advice as you can on this subject.
You must have a holding pen. A small enclosure for you when you have to inject or nail clip.

Alpacas generally do not like to be caught, so the smaller the area, the easier it is and the less stressed they become. Do be careful though, they can kick and spit, and believe me, you want to avoid being caught in the cross-fire of a spit-off!! It’s not pleasant!!
