Alpacas are pretty low maintenance, that’s not too say you can sit back and let them get on with things. You invest a substantial amount of money in your animals, so you want to do the best for them. They require daily good grazing and hay (buy the best you can afford, we feed a good, guaranteed Ragwort free meadow hay) and fresh water. It is said, never give an Alpaca any water that you wouldn’t drink yourself, they will go without rather than drink dirty water.
There are different theories about whether to feed a mineral and vitamin supplement. We currently feed Camelid Complete Feed. Our Veterinary Surgeon suggests you test your soil first, see what nutrients are there and then decide whether you need to feed a supplement. We choose to feed it just to be sure they are receiving all the nutrients they require.
It’s important to hand-score your animals on a monthly basis on a 1 – 5 scale. 1 being lean and 5 being plump. Ideally you need to aim for about 2 – 3, but do be aware that animals will always vary as do we.
