Alpaca Welfare

Vaccinations:

Alpacas require vaccinations against Clostridial Diseases. We use Heptovac P Plus. This gives them good protection against any of the diseases they can be susceptible to. Worming is a different subject. If you routinely worm your animals, they may develop a resistance, and because there are only a few wormers which we can use, you then struggle to know what to do next. We have regular worm counts done, by means of sending in a faeces sample, and worm them only if necessary. Do discuss your worming/vaccination programme with your vet to work out what is best for your animals.

External Parasites:

In the warmer months of the year, mites, flies and midges can cause problems with your animals. Keep a watchful eye for any sore or bald patches, particularly on the ears, face, feet and inside the tops of the legs. The skin may become itchy and flaky, but a soothing skin balm (we use Sudocrem) applied daily should help. If the problem persists, seek the help of your Vet as skin scrapings may be necessary to identify the source of the problem.
